Bring the DEI boycott energy to the beauty industry
I was interviewed in the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper this past Tuesday. I had forgotten that my Atlanta move date was fast approaching, The nationally known newspaper wanted to interview me about the newest EWG.org study done this year that mirrors the same bad news and results that it found in 2016. The studies expose the beauty industry for marketing toxic beauty products to Black women. What a full circle moment for me to be interviewed about this study and my why for creating Divine Clementine Bath and Body. Here is the link to the full interview, Bring the DEI boycott energy to the beauty industry by Nedra Rhone
Who knew that 29 years in ATL, I would become not only a singer, chart topping songwriter, award winning entrepreneur, and a Self-Care Revolutionary as well!?
Making The Self Care Revolution Irresistible
“As a culture worker who belongs to an oppressed people my job is to make revolution irresistible.”
― Conversations with Toni Cade Bambara
I have always loved this quote by late Womanist author Toni Cade Bambara. In 2017, one year after the 1st EWG.org study was done to find that 1 in 12 personal care products marketed to Black women were toxic, I purchased "Self- Care Matters, A Revolutionary Approach, A Guide to Creating a Holistic Self Care Plan" by my dear friend, Anana Harris Parris. I purchased it twice for 2 people and then purchased it for myself. I needed the book badly! I had been dealing with trying to heal fibroids naturally, having small victories here and there and I was TIRED. I decided to quit playing around and get laser focused on the 1 area of self-care had the most critical need. According to the Strategic Self Care framework, there are 6 areas of self-care. I needed to get a clear strategy down for my Physical self-care, because fibroids were really starting to dampen my quality of life. I had an idea how revolutionary self-care could be, but I wasn't crystal clear on how much self-care was more than bubble baths and red wine!
According to Anana's book, Strategic Self Care is the act of addressing a critical need that can affect all of the other areas of self-care. Chile, my mind was blown! I had never heard this before, and I needed and wanted to know more. So fast forward to 2020. I decided that I wanted to be well and once I made that decision, there was no turning back. I called Anana and signed up for the 7 Day Strategic Self Care intensive and became a Certified Strategic Self Care Ambassador in 2020. It's been one of the best decisions I have ever made for my overall health and wellness. Anytime I have a critical need or challenge, I have the Strategic Self Care plan to lean into. It always helps me no matter how hard life may get. I wrote about my own Strategic self-care plan and journey in my book F*ck These Fibroids: A Guide for Black women with Fibroids

As Black women, we need to be able to create rituals, joy, balance and intentional wellness practices that ground us in this society. We honestly cannot leave our beauty needs up to corporations who do not care about our humanity. We have been reminded yet once again, that we must do our own due diligence to seek out, educate ourselves and vote with our dollars when it comes to our buying choices in the beauty industry. Our company was created due to my own uterine fibroid diagnosis. Though we are not found on EWG.org currently, in full transparency, an EWG.org rating costs money to acquire, we do stand by our word that we create products by hand from safe, locally sourced ingredients since 2009.
